IF

"If the exhibition of God's glory and the deepest joy of human souls are one thing, then all true virtue among human beings must aim at bringing people to rejoice in the glory of God. No act is truly virtuous-that is, truly loving-that does not come from and aim at joy in the glory of God.
The ground for this truth is laid in Edwards's The End for Which God Created the World, but the exposition of it was given in The Nature of True Virtue which Edwards wrote at the same time (1755) and intended to publish bound together with The End in one volume.
There he said,

"If there could be . . . a cause determining a person to benevolence towards the whole world of mankind . . . exclusive of . . . love to God, . . . it cannot be of the nature of true virtue."

The reason for this sweeping indictment of God-neglecting "virtue" is not hard to see in Edward's God-centered universe:

"So far as a virtuous mind exercises true virtue in benevolence to created beings, it chiefly seeks the good of the creature, consisting in its knowledge or view of God's glory and beauty, its union with God, and conformity to him, love to him, and joy in him."

In other words, if God's glory is the only all-satisfying reality in the universe, then to try to do good for people, without aiming to show them the glory of God and ignite in them a delight in God, would be like treating fever with cold packs when you have penicillin."

God's Passion for His Glory, What Is the Essence of True Virtue? Implication #4., John Piper [1]

and IF

"The task of Christian scholarship is to study reality as a manifestation of God's glory, to speak about it with accuracy, and to savor the beauty of God in it."

God's Passion For His Glory, page 43, John Piper[2]

and IF

"I sense that in the humanities and the natural sciences and social sciences and the arts God and his Word are often taken for granted. If someone queries why concrete Biblical truth is not more explicitly wrestled with in relation to the tenets of literature or sociology or history or economics or psychology or speech or math or chemistry or physics or theater or physical education or political science--if someone queries why the Biblical vision of reality has such a low profile, the answer is too often, 'We take that for granted. That's our working assumption while we deal with the world of contemporary thought and practice. That's the foundation on which we build."

The Supremacy of God in the Life of the Mind, Northwestern College Chapel. February 16, 1993, John Piper [3]

Then

We should rebuild education from the God-centered ground up. Big project? Yes. But necessary if we want to spread a passion for the supremacy of God in all things for the joy of all peoples through Jesus Christ.

Here is the vision.

Remember (or imagine) all the subjects you learned growing up;

Scripture, Creation, Providence, Biology, Botany, Physics, Chemistry, Physiology, Anthropology, Geology, Astronomy, Ecology, English, Gym, Home economics, shop class, history, the roles of men and women, family, dinosaurs, Math, etc....

Now imagine,, what if Jonathan Edwards had taught all those subjects.... or what if someone said, "Piper, write a Physics book." That should sum it up! A God-centered world view! A day of learning soaked with altitudinous heights of Glory. Meditations on the wisdom and majesty and glory and excellence of God in every detail of life and thought.

Taught with the end of the glory of God in the happiness of His people in mind.

Now, imagine, what if you had been taught this from the moment you were born. If your parents and schools and etc... presented to you a view of the world and life and every thought, that was soaked with God and His Passion for His own glory.

If our duty is,

Rom 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

Then, imagine what transformation the Spirit could work if every input-ed thought was Christ and His glory in all things.

We have a delightful duty to God and to the coming generations to seek their highest good. To pour out our lives and resources for their greatest and best happiness.

If the sum of the command is "do unto others as you would have done unto your self " then think,,, would you not have had this or have this done unto and for you??? Would you not want The glory of God in the face of Christ expounded from every corner and in every subject? Would you not want your vocational and technical education to show you why and how business and trades are from and through and to God?

Would you who are training to become doctors and physicians want to have a Christ-centered, God honoring, ethic and basis and aim, etc. etc. for why you are a doctor.

If what our people need now, and have always needed the most,,, is God and to know Him and enjoy Him forever, and if truth is one of the primary means that He uses to communicate Himself to man, then does this not seem like a logical extension of all Christian duty??

It seems to me that it is our delightful obligation to claim all knowledge for the glory of God,, for,

Isa 42:8 I am the LORD: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images.

and

Psa 29:2 Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name; worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness.

so, if any knowledge is lawful to be had, then any knowledge we do obtain must, as God has said, give Him the glory, and he will not have it ultimately to be otherwise.

Therefore, if God commands us to give Him the glory due to Him, and we know His passion is that He will not give it to any other but will get it, then WE WHO ARE SO GIFTED MUST GIVE HIM THE GLORY IN ALL OUR PURSUITS, TEACHING AND LEARNING.(Rom 12, Parable of Talents,etc...) AND IF WE HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY AND MEANS, WHICH WE DO, THEN WE MUST GIVE HIM THE GLORY WHICH IS DUE HIM.

That means all glory,,,,for all is His. He is the creator of all things. All things are from, through and to or for Him. Therefore, in all things WE MUST AS CHRISTIANS GIVE HIM THE GLORY OF THEM.

For in Romans 1:18-32 it says,

18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;

19 Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.

20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:

21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.

22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,

23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.

24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:

25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.

26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:

27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.

28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;

29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,

30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,

31 Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:

32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

Although they knew God they glorified Him not as God, nor were thankful,,, etc... Which means although they knew that all this was his creation and that he was the Lord and provider of all, they did not acknowledge him to be so, they did not thank Him and give him the glory that was due to the one who was such a God as He. This brought on God giving them up.

So we, as Christians, who have been commanded so, must then SEEK TO GIVE HIM THE GLORY. Actively, make efforts to publicly give the glory to God as creator, preserver, provider, sovereign, Lord, savior, etc... We should do the opposite of what they did, and do it with all our might.

Thus we must take up all the glory of all that is and ascribe it to Him, speak out and say,,, He is the maker and thinker of these things. All of this is pointing to Him. He is the sustainer of it and He is seeking His glory by it.

So

What do we do?

My proposal, is that we get together a group of Christian educators from every field of study, and thoroughly train them in Christian hedonism. Have them read and study and learn "The End for Which God Created the World" by Edwards until it and others (such as Piper's books etc...) have thoroughly soaked them with a passion for His supreme Glory in all things. Or, get some radical Christian Hedonists to take some serious courses in all the fields of study. Then under a newly formed publishing house --Doxology Press-- or whatever, start re-writing the whole educational system from the ideas up. Just like Edwards or Piper would write them. That is Write TEXT BOOKS, from preschool to doctoral level studies.

For example, an anthropology CLASS of college level that taught Biblical anthropology. Seminaries do this you say,,, yes they do, but usually only few go to them. I am speaking of inundating homeschools and every possible educational institution with these new text books.

Or a Botany text book written from a Creationist, God doing all to get his glory, look at the wisdom beauty and perfections of God in this flower,,,type of text book, point of view. Pointing in all things to the righteousness and "moral rectitude" or "affection" of God's heart. That He seeks His own glory in all things from a supreme delight and rapture in His beautiful perfections, and that it is our highest duty to get as much of this knowledge of His glory and enjoy it as strongly as we can, God willing.

This is only the skeletal idea so far. With prayer and godly idea having, this may become the instrument of God to fill the nations with the knowledge of His glory.

I have no greater joy than to think of people from their infancy to their doctoral dissertation getting a God soaked view , a worship fueling view of all things.

Just imagine what this would be like,,,, God's wisdom and excellencies expounded as the beginning and the middle and the end of all. Can you imagine the joy and the wonder that would come into souls soaked with such an education.

Missionaries in foreign countries, by God's help, could set up schools for the poor and etc... with these texts and teachers who love the truths in them. Who knows what God could do in other countries.

In the 2000 Baptist faith and message, it makes mention of a Christian school or educational system. Who says that Christians cannot, by the Grace of Christ establish such a system?

Lots to think about? Yes, but OH think of the glory and the reward to come.
